Create A Critter
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) All Vegetable Shortening
- 1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3 cups (750 mL) Robin Hood® Original All Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder
- 1/2 tsp (2 mL) baking soda
- 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
- 1 oz (28 g) chocolate, melted
- decorations — mixed nuts, cereals, candies
Directions
Step 1:
Preheat oven to at 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 2:
Cream butter, shortening, sugar and eggs together thoroughly in a large mixing bowl.
Step 3:
Stir in dry ingredients. Mix well.
Step 4:
Place half of dough in separate bowl and mix in melted chocolate.
Step 5:
Chill dough 30 minutes for easy handling.
Do your kids know why it’s important to chill the dough? This lets the dough firm up, making it easier to handle and shape into critters.
Step 6:
Create animals by placing mounds of plain and chocolate dough onto prepared baking sheets. Mounds of dough should just touch. Place animals 3" (8 cm) apart. Decorate as desired.
Looking for new ideas for what to make? Your kids can try a teddy bear, a spider or their own creation using rolled up dough for the head, nose and hair!
Step 7:
Bake in preheated oven for about 12 minutes, or until plain dough is light golden. Time will depend on size of cookie. Cool.
Name that critter! When everyone’s cookies are done baking, go around in a circle and guess what each one is. Get your kids to pick silly names for your critters, then enjoy them together!
